Lấy bối cảnh là khu Harlem năm 1987, khu sinh sống của của người da đen ở New York, nổi tiếng về tình trạng tội phạm, cô bé 16 tuổi Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) là một cô gái da đen ở tầng đáy xã hội, sinh ra trong một cuộc sống không ai muốn. Trường lớp nơi cô học là một nơi hỗn loạn, đạt trình độ lớp 9 nhưng cô không thể đọc hay viết.


Cô gái chịu đựng một cuộc sống khắc nghiệt khó tưởng tượng. Bị mẹ đẻ ngược đãi, bố đẻ hiếp dâm, cô gái trở thành một người béo phì, xấu xí, nghèo khổ, cau có, thất học, không có tình yêu và coi như ở bên lề xã hội.

Đang trong đêm đen của cuộc sống, chúng ta cùng theo dõi hành trình đi tìm ánh sáng và tình yêu của cô bé.
