Khi dữ liệu của tập tin được ghi, xóa trên ổ cứng hoặc thay đổi kích thước, dữ liệu được lưu vào các cluster trống (hoặc đánh dấu trống) đầu tiên. Với nhiều người dùng thích thử nghiệm, cài đặt, gỡ bỏ phần mềm liên tục, nguy cơ ổ cứng bị phân mảnh khá cao do dữ liệu nằm rải khắp nơi trên đĩa cứng. Đầu đọc phải di chuyển “vất vả” hơn để truy xuất đầy đủ dữ liệu của tập tin đó nên thời gian truy xuất chậm hơn, làm chậm tốc độ hệ thống hay thậm chí có thể gây treo máy (tạm thời) trên những hệ thống cũ, tốc độ chậm. Ngoài ra, việc lựa chọn kích thước cluster không phù hợp khi định dạng (format) phân vùng đĩa cứng cũng ảnh hưởng đến sự phân mảnh. Chẳng hạn, với kích thước cluster 8KB thì một tập tin 4KB cũng chiếm hết cluster đó, phần còn lại bị lãng phí.

Chính vì thế mà sau khi sử dụng 1 thời gian bạn phải tiến hành giải phân mảnh ( hay còn gọi là dồn đĩa hay chạy Defrag). Windows cũng có kèm theo chương trình Disk Defragmenter để bạn giải phân mảnh. Tuy nhiên, chương trình này hoạt động “chậm như rùa”, đặc biệt là trên các ổ cứng có dung lượng lớn, bị phân mảnh nhiều. Mình cũng thử dùng khá nhiều chương trình có tính năng Defrag khác nhưng kết quả cũng chỉ nhanh hơn “rùa” 1 tí. Trong số đó có Auslogics Disk Defrag, một chương trình dọn đĩa miễn phí nhưng lại hoạt động khá nhanh. Và cũng tình cờ mình tải bản mới của Auslogics Disk Defrag về dùng thử thì kết quả thật bất ngờ. Free space consolidation

Free space on a disk is often split into many small gaps between files. Windows fills these gaps with newly created or extended files. System files smart placement

Keeping the MFT Reserved Zone Clear

Normally, NTFS file system reserves about 12.5% of the disk volume for the MFT records (a place where information about every file and directory is stored). However, when the rest of the disk space is getting low, the MFT Reserved Zone will be used for storing regular files. This may lead to MFT fragmentation.

Disk Defrag 3 replaces regular files from the MFT Reserved Zone into the rest of the disk space, allowing NTFS to allocate contiguous space for the MFT records and thus to prevent its fragmentation.

Enhanced user interface

A redesigned user interface makes navigation through Disk Defrag 3 more intuitive than ever before. It can be integrated into the Windows Explorer context menu and minimized to system tray on close. Use its many new customization settings to simplify defragmentation process.

List of fragmented files

Disk Defrag 3 lists all the fragmented files after performing disk analysis. Selecting any file from the list will highlight its clusters location on a fragmentation map. You can find the most fragmented files and their paths by sorting the list. Right-click on any file directly in the list to defragment it.
