Four dead in Vietnam fireworks balast: official sources

Three foreigners and one Vietnamese person were killed in a fireworks explosion during preparations for Hanoi's showcase millennium celebrations, official sources said Wednesday.
Two sources, who asked not to be further identified, both confirmed the deaths to AFP.
The nationalities of the foreigners could not be officially confirmed, although Singapore's foreign ministry said one of the dead may have come from the city-state.
Vietnamese media also reported the fatalities.
VietnamNet online news service quoted Nguyen Duc Nhanh, director of the Hanoi police, as saying four people were killed when two containers of fireworks "burned" and three other people were injured.
"The reason for the fire is due to mistakes in the transportation process," Nhanh said.
Witnesses said they heard the blast before noon near Hanoi's My Dinh Stadium, where the city's 1,000th anniversary celebrations are to culminate in a fireworks ceremony on Sunday.
The explosion sent metal debris flying and windows at the Vietnam Sport Hospital and apartment blocks about 200 metres (yards) from the blast site were shattered or blown out.
A woman who lives on the sixth floor of an apartment building in the area said she was cooking when she heard "big explosions" and rushed to her balcony where she saw a plume of white smoke.
"The smoke was not like when someone burned things. Many people rushed down to the street to watch. The smoke came from the stadium area. There were about six or seven explosions," said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said local authorities informed its embassy that "a Singaporean woman could be one of four fatalities" after an explosion occurred in the vicinity of My Dinh Stadium.
"The embassy is working to verify this, and to ascertain if any other Singaporeans are affected," it said.
The website of respected newspaper Tuoi Tre cited police in the area as saying one person had died in an explosion but when AFP reached the same police station an officer said he did not have "any information.""
Photographs posted on the Tuoi Tre and VietnamNet news websites showed a large cloud of thick smoke in the air, but the reports were later removed from the Internet.
AFP reporters saw what appeared to be a twisted and blackened transport container on a grassy field about 100 metres to the side of the stadium.
Uniformed police and several men in civilian clothes walked among a scoffolding-like structure which had collapsed on the ground, and workers in green vests carried away a large piece of metal.
Other large chunks of debris appeared to have been blasted about 100 metres from the scene, which dozens of people observed from behind a fence.
Students from a nearby sports training facility said several ambulances were sent to the scene.
By late afternoon, music and drumming sounds came from inside the stadium and a lion danced at the front entrance near a giant "1,000" sign as preparations for the weekend spectacle continued.
An official at the city's local government, the People's Committee, said 63 million dollars was allocated for the birthday event, which has nightly drawn thousands of people into the city centre.

Large Medium Small HANOI, October 6 (Xinhua) -- Two containers carrying firework exploded in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi Wednesday, killing four and leaving three others injured, Vietnam News Agency reported, citing source with local public security department.
"Mistake in transportation causes the accident," said Nguyen Duc Nhanh, chief of public security department of Hanoi.
The fireworks are to be displayed for the 1,000th anniversary celebration of Hanoi on Sunday. They suddenly exploded when being transported to the My Dinh stadium where the celebration is to be held.
Ten ambulances and eight fire trucks came to the site a few minutes after the explosion to extinguish fires and rescue people, said Nhanh.
The report did not specify the nationalities of the victims.
