Và tất nhiên, chẳng thể nào bỏ qua cái thói quen rất đáng yêu của cô ấy là mua sắm.
Đâu thể vội vàng quy kết mua sắm là một tật xấu, nếu không độc giả đã cố tình phớt lờ vô số niềm vui trong đôi mắt lấp lánh của Rebecca. Chỉ đơn giản là cô ấy thấy chúng “thật đáng thèm muốn”, “cực kỳ cần thiết”, “thực sự tuyệt vời”, “ai cũng phải ngưỡng mộ”, “đáng giá từng xu”, “thứ đẹp nhất mà tôi từng thấy”… Riêng khoản này, người phụ nữ nào chẳng tìm thấy ít nhiều điểm chung với cô ấy. Hơn thế nữa, Rebecca chẳng phải loại người vô trách nhiệm, cô luôn cân nhắc trong mọi tình huống, luôn thấp thoáng trong đầu khoản nợ mấy nghìn bảng kia đang đe dọa cô. Chỉ có điều, mỗi khi tập cắt giảm chi tiêu thất bại, hoặc kế hoạch kiếm thêm tiền bất thành, cô ấy chỉ có mỗi cách an ủi duy nhất là mua thêm cho mình một thứ gì đó. Và, hãy tưởng tượng bạn sẽ như thế nào nếu hàng ngày phải nghĩ ra đủ các lý do oái oăm như gãy chân, viêm bạch cầu, bà cô chết… để trốn tránh trước hàng lô lá thư đòi nợ khẩn cấp từ ngân hàng, trong khi mình vẫn không cưỡng nổi trước cám dỗ được mua sắm?
Cứ thế, độc giả dần dà có chút cảm tình với cô gái hậu đậu, kém may mắn, thất tình và đang lâm cảnh nợ nần chồng chất. Cả cái cách mà cô ấy tự tháo gỡ mới thật vụng về và lạc quan làm sao. Chúng khiến cho cảm giác thương mến át đi cái cau mày trách móc. Chỉ đơn giản, cô ấy có cách bào chữa hợp lý cho tất cả vướng mắc đang lướt qua mình, nhất là khi thói quen mua sắm đã trở thành phần quan trọng trong… kỹ năng sống. Từ một điểm yếu, nó không những được xoay chiều mà còn trở thành khiếu thẩm mỹ.
Cứng đầu, thực dụng và hay lý sự (đôi lúc hơi…cùn), Rebecca xem ra chẳng có duyên lắm với cánh đàn ông và cô đâu dư dả thời gian để thở dài than thân sướt mướt. Cho dù bị bỏ rơi bởi James, một anh chàng quá bảo thủ hay bị gã nhà giàu Luke Branda chơi cho một vố đắng lòng trong một dịp đi mua sắm… chẳng gì có thể đọng lại lâu trong cô ấy. Kể cả khi tài chính của mình gặp cơn khủng hoảng be bét và bản thân có nguy cơ dính líu tới pháp luật, Rebecca vẫn là chính mình khi từ chối một tấm séc năm nghìn bảng của Tarquin, một kẻ si tình giàu có. Cô từng viết khá nhiều tiểu thuyết dưới tên thật của mình, tuy nhiên, phải đến khi loạt truyện về “Tín đồ Shopping” được xuất bản, tên tuổi của Sophie Kinsella mới lọt vào danh sách các tác giả có sách bán chạy hàng đầu thế giới. Madeleine Wickham (nee Townley), who also writes under the pseudonym Sophie Kinsella, is an Englishauthor of so called chick-lit.
Educated at Putney High School and New College, Oxford, she worked as a financial journalist before turning to fiction. She is best known for writing the Shopaholic novels series of chick-lit novels, which focus on the misadventures of Becky Bloomwood, a financial journalist who cannot manage her own finances. The books follow her life from when her credit card debt first becomes overwhelming ("Confessions of a Shopaholic") to the latest book on being married and having a child ("Shopaholic & Baby"). Throughout the entire series, her obsession with shopping and its resulting complications for her life is a central theme.

The first Shopaholic book (Confessions of a Shopaholic) is scheduled to be released as a Disney film in 2009, with Isla Fisher playing Becky and Hugh Dancy as Luke Brandon. The film will be set in New York, rather than London, where the book is set.

Sophie lives in Hertfordshire with her husband, Henry Wickham, a headmaster of a boys' prep school. They have been married for 17 years and they have 3 sons, Freddy 11, Hugo 9 and Oscar 2.
Her latest novel under the name Sophie Kinsella will be published in 2009 and is set to be called 'Twenties Girl'
